One thing I might comment on regarding your exchange with Daniel Stern (a Medium writer?) is that “Progressives” aren’t necessarily all liberals, nor are Democrats necessarily progressive. (In fact, most aren’t.) This fact has been the throughline among my articles: that political boundaries between parties is not necessarily shaped (anymore) by particular ideologies and other identity vectors, despite the fact that many such subgroups do tend to lean towards particular parties. In other words, the association is not bidirectional, yet people inappropriately stick more strongly to their party of choice as an identity vector than to their true feelings on topics.

For these reasons (among others), many political “discussions” get really confusing and combative. The very article you cited of mine intended to make that point and draw clear examples on how suc confusion is made.

It’d be interesting for you to consider that in the context of Part 1 and 3 of this series too.
